Marching Band

The Broad Run Marching Spartans program is an award-winning ensemble that combines instrumental music with the visual effect of drill, formations, and pageantry. Our extra-curricular program is comprised of Winds (Brass & Woodwinds), Percussion (Battery & Front Ensemble), and Color Guard.

The Broad Run High School Band Boosters (BRHSBBA) holds a mandatory Marching Spartans Commitment Meeting each spring for the upcoming school year to facilitate registration and provide important details about the upcoming season, such as rehearsal schedules. This meeting welcomes our rising freshmen into the fold and all Marching Spartans families, new and veteran alike, are expected to attend.

Prior to this our annual Commitment Meeting, our Color Guard and Percussion sections host interest clinics to recruit rookie members and go over basic required skills. The Percussion section also holds placement auditions to determine which students will march with the Battery and which students will perform with the Front Ensemble.

An annual fee is required for participation, which helps to offset the costs incurred for running Band Camp and the rest of the marching season. This fee will be announced prior to Commitment Night each season and financial aid is available for students who qualify. A portion of our Marching Spartans participation fee ($25.00) provides parents with membership in the Broad Run High School Band Boosters Association (BRHSBBA).

New to Broad Run and not able to join until Band Camp in August? We will make every attempt to accommodate students who join us at Band Camp.

The Marching Spartans begin their season prep during the summer! Color Guard members rehearse with their sections throughout the summer to hone their technique – the summer rehearsal schedule is announced each spring – and students in these sections are expected to attend these rehearsals unless they traveling or ill. Winds students are expected to rehearse their show music on their own during the summer, working towards memorization of their parts. Our season kicks into high gear in August with mandatory Band Camp, a 3-week session where students practice marching fundamentals, set drill, add music and choreography, and ultimately learn their full show!

Once the school year begins, marching season is in full swing! Rehearsals are held throughout the week after school. Marching Band season runs concurrent with the football season, and the Marching Spartans provide direct support as a pep band during home games and also performs their field program during halftime. On Saturdays, we take the program to the competitive field, participating in marching band competitions that are held throughout the region.

Towards the end of the season, the Marching Spartans perform at a Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA) Assessment, where they will earn a rating (Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor) instead of a score. Achieving a Superior rating at Marching Assessments is the first step each year to being named a Virginia Honor Band.

We’re very excited for the 2019-2020 season, and we look forward to having you – as a student – participating in our great program, and we also are thrilled to have you – as family or friends – partnering with us as we all work together towards continued success.
